Osteofibrous dysplasia - Tibia - Photomicrograph
  • Case ID: 95
  • Classic Case: true
  • Diagnosis: Osteofibrous dysplasia
  • Category: Bone Tumors
  • Category Type: Osteoid-forming
  • Category Sub Type: Benign
  • Location: Tibia
  • Age: 9
  • Sex: M
  • Treatment: Observation
  • Image ID: 1326
  • Image Type: Photomicrograph
  • Images relating to this case: 1324 , 1325 , 1326.

High power photomicrograph of a specimen taken from the anterior cortex of the tibia shows benign dysplastic osteoid formation in the center of the field (similar to what is seen in fibrous dysplasia) surrounded by benign fibrous tissue with some osteoclastic remodelling. The osteoblastic rimming surrounding the bony tribeculum is not seen in fibrous dysplasia. In this case no further treatment was advised. The boy should be followed until the age of 15 years at which point an elective bone grafting procedure could be done if indicated at that time.
