IMAGE DESCRIPTION:
This low power photomicrograph from a biopsy of the proximal tibia shows a diffuse field of benign-appearing fibrous tissue where there would normally be fatty marrow in the proximal tibia. It is studded with islands of metaplastic bone giving the characteristic alphabet soup formation that is quite diagnostic of fibrous dysplasia. Note that there is no evidence of the osteoblastic rimming of the trabular pattern seen in osteofibrous dysplasia.
