Because a simple laminectomy alone would destabilize the spine and result in progressive kyphotic deformity and cord compromise, a stabilization was carried out posteriorly with multiple threaded Steinman pins placed over the intact lamina, three above and three below the area of the metastatic tumor. The pins are secured in position with sublaminar wires, as seen here.
