The tumor was widely resected and the surgical specimen cut open has the appearance of a benign lobulated fatty lipoma. Only with microscopic evaluation was it possible for the pathologist to find a few areas of scattered "signet ring" lipoblasts to make the diagnosis of a well-differentiated liposarcoma which is sometimes referred to as an atypical lipoma. This lesion carries an excellent prognosis but with a recurrence rate of up to as high as 50%. There is essentially no chance of metastases to the lung. Radiation therapy is not required for this low-grade lesion.
