A 10-year-old girl had significant injury to the shoulder area three months before this film was taken. AP radiograph shows an ossifying soft tissue mass medial to the upper humerus with a peripheral mature ossification pattern that strongly suggests the diagnosis of traumatic myositis ossificans. The central lucent area rules out the possibility of soft tissue osteosarcoma. This lesion was treated by simple observation. The pain resolved within several months and there was no restricted range of motion.
