CT scan taken prior to the total hip arthroplasty shows a heavily calcified, lobulated, intramedullary tumor filling the supraacetabular portion of the hip. It looks like a low-grade chondrosarcoma but also has the characteristic appearance of a giant bone island. This patient was taken to the operating room for a total hip replacement at which time the lesion in the supra-acetabular area was found to be a hard bone island, with no evidence of calcification.
