IMAGE DESCRIPTION:
Suspecting a sarcoma diagnosis, the patient was taken to the operating room and the proximal third of the humerus was resected. This photograph shows the appearance of the lesion after removal. A large hemorrhagic synovial cyst surrounds the entire upper end of the humeral head and neck area with extensive erosion into the articular surface of the humerus, similar to the appearance of a patient with hemophilia or extensive pigmented villonodular synovitis. In this case, a biopsy from the synovial lining revealed the typical histological features for rheumatoid autoimmune disease with no evidence of sarcoma. A Neer prosthesis was used to replace the defect following removal of the upper humerus.
